The thirteen galleries we saw on day eleven (and one from
day ten) have inspired me to talk about presentation. We saw a display in a
garret, where all the jewellery was laid out on easels, and one in a basement
where the jewellery hung from hooks which were arguably part of the jewels
themselves. Another gallery we saw at the end of the day was in the front of a
second hand bookstore. It seems that there is some element of the artists
making use of the spaces they can get, but it is obvious that they are using
them to their best potential. It would be interesting to know when the gallery
space has had some influence upon the work itself (at least in some instances,
this must be the case). This is an area in which I have had trouble before, the
presentation and display of work, but I believe this is due to a lack of experience,
rather than a lack of aptitude. Seeing the way the galleries here have handled
the presentation of work may well be helpful, I certainly hope it is.
